We receive a lot of calls at the VPIS from vets who have already started treatment before speaking to us.  We understand that poisoning cases can cause some concern and that it is tempting to start decontamination as soon as an animal presents but, if the animal is well or only showing mild signs, please try and call us first so that we can carry out a risk assessment for you.

In many cases we have to inform the vet that no treatment is required from our data and therefore the animal has been overtreated which we would all like to avoid.  Alternatively, the owner can be directed to Animal PoisonLine, our owner’s line, so that we can triage the case for you before they make an appointment.
