We have recently experienced an increase in cases where owners have given their pets salt water or hydrogen peroxide in an effort to make their pet vomit.

These methods can cause adverse or toxic effects which may worsen the animal’s condition and can also potentially be fatal. In addition, in many cases emesis it not actually required and can be contraindicated in some cases. Salt water emetics should NEVER be given because of the risk fo salt poisoning.

Inducing vomiting should only be carried out by a veterinary professional in a safe environment where the animal’s condition can be monitored, should any complications arise.

Owners can call Animal PoisonLine on 01202 509000 for advice if they are concerned their pet has ingested something toxic. We will be able to advise whether the animal needs to see a vet. We do not recommend inducing emesis at home.

Veterinary professionals can call VPIS for treatment advice for any poisoning case – 020 73 055055.
