As discussed in last month’s newsletter and on our social media pages, a Food Standards Agency Alert has been released regarding the recent concerning cases of pancytopenia in cats.
There is concern for the safety of certain batches of 3 brands of cat food (Applaws, AVA, Sainsbury’s Hypoallegenic). There is a possible link to the cat food products listed, and an increase in cases of pancytopenia in cats. The cause remains unknown. Treatment and management of affected cats is supportive; prognosis is poor.
The RVC has stated earlier this week that it is now aware of 394 cats with the illness, with a mortality rate of 67%
Cases can be reported via the RVC survey- https://rvc.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/pancytopenia
